Being fearless doesn’t mean you’re never afraid.
Jessie Nelson wants more than anything to be fearless.
Ever since the letters from Mom stopped coming, Jessie has been afraid—afraid that something terrible has happened in the war where her mom is fighting. And afraid that her mom might never come back.
Thinking a change of scenery might be a helpful distraction, Jessie’s dad moves them to a small town in southern Minnesota. There, Jessie meets two new friends: Oscar, a thoughtful boy whose brother just returned from fighting in Afghanistan; and Nicky, a goofy theater kid who constantly cracks jokes.
Together, the three kids stumble upon an old barn with the sound of terrified dogs coming from inside. Wanting to be brave like her mom, Jessie breaks into the barn and discovers a puppy mill where dozens of dogs are being neglected. While she can’t save all the dogs, she can save one. She carts the dog home in a rickety red wheelbarrow. But hiding a stolen dog from Dad and Grandpa causes more problems than Jessie anticipated.
As more time passes, keeping the dog hidden becomes increasingly difficult. In the end, Jessie learns what it means to be brave and that sometimes helping others is the best way to heal yourself.

Reviews
“Johnson has written an adventure story with depth and heart — not too sad, but just enough tension to keep your eight- to ten-year-old (boy or girl) reading.” (Superior Reads)
“She wove three types of PTSD into the book — a town struggling with PTSD from a tornado; war veterans, young and older, with PTSD from serving their country … and finally the resulting PTSD that dogs develop from being neglected and mistreated in puppy mills.” (Nicollet County Ledger)
“Loved this one! Grabs you right from the beginning! Kids will be rooting for the main characters. Great title for first chapter read or Book Chat to create a waiting list in the classroom!” (Cindy Schwind, retired reading interventionist K‑12)
“Picked this up tonight, and I can’t put it down. Sleep?? Maybe I’ll just stay up until my 7am dentist appointment?!!” (Jennifer Halbur, Middle School ELA teacher)
“Jessie’s mom is enlisted & she & her dad move to be with her grandfather. Jessie meets new friends and learns what being fearless truly is! Have your tissues ready!!” (Stacy, ELA teacher)
“The thing I loved best about this book was the heart. A lot of the characters have problems or issues that they are dealing with, but they also have a basic goodness to them that really shines through (not counting the guys who are running the puppy mill — they are just trouble). Through life’s difficulties, kindness matters. As Jessie, the main character shows, sometimes kindness requires bravery. That thread — the importance of kindness, especially through tough times — runs through this book.” (Matt)
“Love it! This is exactly the type of book I would have wanted my kids to read when they were young. This is type of book I would have stayed up all night under the covers to read. Great story, small town life, with real people, real struggles, real lives, strong values.” (Elizabeth W. Lee)
